Why Cholos' Food Truck in Sukhumvit, Bangkok Is More Than Just a Taco Food Truck

Cholos started as a taco food truck parked in the lot of a Sukhumvit Soi 12 condominium, but it has since grown into a small Bangkok institution with courtyard seating, weekend events, and three additional locations across the city. What keeps it from being just another food truck in Sukhumvit Bangkok is the combination of consistent kitchen quality, a sit-down setup that didn't exist when it opened, and a reputation built almost entirely on word of mouth and repeat visits.

Most food trucks in Bangkok exist for a season, then move on or quietly disappear. Cholos has done the opposite. Time Out Bangkok's writeup noted that the truck still bears the faded markings of its previous occupant, a now-closed truck called Rocket, parked in the same Sukhumvit Soi 12 lot it's known for today. That detail matters because it places Cholos inside an actual lineage of Bangkok street food, not a pop-up dressed up to look established.

Where Exactly Is the Cholos Food Truck Located in Sukhumvit?

The original truck sits at 89 Sukhumvit Soi 12, inside the Lakeview Residences compound in Khlong Toei. It's a short walk off the main Sukhumvit road, tucked into a courtyard rather than facing traffic, which gives it a kind of hidden-in-plain-sight feel that several reviewers have picked up on. The location isn't glamorous. It's a parking lot with tables and string lights. That's part of the appeal.

What Sets This Taco Food Truck Apart from Others in the City?

Bangkok has had a handful of taco-focused trucks over the years, including Taco Taxi near Nana and various pop-ups that come and go with the seasons. What separates Cholos is staying power and a kitchen pedigree that's unusual for a truck. Time Out Bangkok traced the founding back to chef Eduard González, who had worked internationally before landing a stint with Gaggan Anand in Bangkok, and chef Radek Zarebinski, who had cooked in a two-Michelin-star kitchen in Los Angeles. Two chefs with that kind of background choosing to start in a parking lot rather than a restaurant says something about how they wanted the food to be judged, on the food, not the address.

  • The founding chefs came from fine dining backgrounds, not casual street food

  • The menu intentionally avoids adjusting recipes for the Thai palate, according to Time Out's reporting

  • Fillings rotate through pork, chicken, fish, and a mushroom option for vegetarians

  • The fish taco built around crispy fish and spicy sauce became the truck's signature order

That combination of pedigree and restraint is rare. Plenty of food trucks lean on novelty. Cholos leans on getting the basics, tortillas, fillings, sauce, right and repeating that consistently.

Has the Sukhumvit Truck Grown Beyond Just Tacos?

Yes, considerably. What began as a single truck has expanded to additional spots in Charoen Krung and Pattaya, along with a sit-down branch at The Commons in Thonglor. A Tripadvisor review of the Thonglor branch specifically noted it had "come a long way" from the original Sukhumvit truck, mentioning a co-owner mingling with guests at tables, which is a different kind of experience than ordering through a truck window. The menu has grown alongside the locations too, now including nachos, nondessert items like flan, and frozen margaritas that get mentioned almost as often as the tacos themselves.

What Do Locals and Visitors Say About the Sukhumvit Food Truck Experience?

The story isn't uniformly perfect, and that's worth saying plainly. One Tripadvisor reviewer who visited shortly after opening described an unusually busy day where some menu items sold out faster than expected, and the owner responded directly to acknowledge it wasn't the usual service standard. That kind of transparency in handling a bad night says something too. Other reviews lean heavily positive, with one Tripadvisor visitor specifically praising the mushroom birria tacos as among the best in Bangkok and noting the food truck atmosphere with its small wooden tables.

Is the Sukhumvit Location Still Worth Visiting with So Many New Branches?

For people who want the original version of the experience, yes. The newer branches offer more comfort and, in Thonglor's case, a more polished sit-down setting, but the Sukhumvit truck is where the format started and where the late-night, casual energy still feels strongest. It draws a mix of partygoers, office workers heading home, and curious tourists who stumbled onto it through a review rather than an ad.
